WHEEL THROWING WORKSHOP
1:1 INTENSIVE COURSE

This class is meant for you if you’d like to do a deep dive into pottery and get to know the whole process from beginning to end. It’s meant for you if you’d like to learn the basics of throwing your first shapes on the wheel, trimming and glazing. I’ll be there for you on the whole journey, guide you, give you space and answer any questions that may arise during the process. I’m fully with you for 2,5 hours so you can get as much value out of this intensive 1:1 class as possible.

First session:
2,5 hour wheel workshop. You’ll wedge your clay and learn the fundamental techniques you need to know to make basic shapes on the wheel. In this first session you’ll get an understanding and feeling of what it means to work with clay on the wheel. You’ll learn how to center the clay, openening, pulling walls and shaping the piece.

Second session:
1-2 hours trimming* (depending on how many pieces you’ve made). In this session you’ll turn the bases of your pieces to make them flat, carve foot rings and/or beautify the outer surfaces of your vessels. It’s a fundamental step to finish the shapes of your creations and get them ready to dry for the next step – the bisque firing.
*Happening ideally 2 days to 1 week after the first class so your pieces have the right consistency.

Third session:
2-3 weeks later once your pieces have dried and were bisque fired, you’ll come back to glaze them. You’ll get an intro in the basics, what to do and not do around glazes. We’ll work with buckets (no liquid glazes) to dunk your pieces. I’ll teach you different ways to glaze your pieces.

Three sessions: 150€

Including:
clay, glaze, bisque firing, glaze firing, tool usage. With no limit on how many pieces you can make.

Additional Info:
There is also the possibility to do a wheel class consisting of the first session only. I’d take care of the rest (trimming, drying, firing, glazing). One-time workshop: 80€. Send me an email.

When:
Once you’ve booked we will work out the timeline of your intensive course. Just send me an email and we’ll find the fitting dates.

Where:
The workshop takes place in the MATE Ceramics studio: Rua do Fonanário 1, 2640-401 Achada-Mafra, Portugal.
The studio is located just 6 minutes from Ericeira towards the inland by car. There is also a bus station in front of the studio on the main street. I’ll send you location instructions after booking as the studio is located on a backroad, not visible from the outside.

All workshops are held in English by default but can be translated in German.
